Yarn Along

Oh my hands have been so full this week!  I'm sure you noticed there have been no posts since this time last week.  And I am sure you have noticed no progression on that shawl.  It is still nesting in that basket by my chair.

We had a wedding party this past weekend and then some wedding casualties the next day.  Finding out that a few pieces of music my daughter wants at the liturgy cannot be played and a few other dramas concerning gifts. Sunday afternoon, a niece and my oldest daughter came to help put the invitations together.  Mimosas all around!!

And this week, while my granddaughter is here, potty training is happening:). Remember what a workout that is?  Every 30 minutes:)

Don't be sad if next week's picture is the same.  The Bridesmaid shower is this weekend and then invitations are mailed on Monday!  From that I promise to post pics!  73 days!

The Fall

I'm writing the story of the loss of my mother and brother, a great lesson for me in love and living.  You can find day 1here and day 2 here.

After my dad's funeral we were really at a loss as to how to proceed. Mother had obviously suffered a traumatic breakdown and her short-term memory was gone. She had no recollection that her husband had died. She was very weak and refused to leave her bed.  Constant care was being provided, as Jerry and I had to return to work. But, it became obvious that a big change was coming.

Prior to all of this happening we had attempted to get my mother to sign documents. A Living Will, Power of Attorney,  etc... She had refused, thinking that she would always be able to make important decisions.

So let me pause here and give you a little background about my mother. She was the youngest of seven and a beautiful redhead. Born to a very poor family,  she was always confident that she would rise above her circumstances. After graduating from high school she attended business school and met my father and married him when she was 20. When my father died, she became a single working woman in an age where that wasn't the norm.  Many would say that my mother was very opinionated and at times I wouldn't disagree with that. But when you look back on what she lived through and had accomplished, I see her personality as one being more of confidence than opinions.

I interject that here because that confidence/opinions comes very much into play as we navigated through how to care for her. She absolutely refused to sign any documents, stating that she was perfectly able to care for herself. Of course we knew she wasn't, and of course we knew it was not her speaking.

Finally, Jerry and I had to make a decision. We had to return to work and there were not enough funds to continue providing around-the-clock care. So we told her that the next morning she would be on her own, but we would be checking in on her. The staff at the assisted living ( where she and dad had been) would look in as well.

The next morning I received a call at work from my husband. Mother had fallen in the kitchen and the paramedics have been summoned. I could not leave work immediately but Jerry could and his forward thinking was amazing. On the way out of his office he grabbed the copies of the documents that mother needed to sign and spoke to the paramedics on his drive down there. He told them under no circumstances were they to move her off the floor. Make her comfortable, but do not move her until he got there. Now this next part may sound rather cruel, but in all honesty it was a very necessary decision. When my husband arrived and  determined that mother was comfortable, he told her that he wanted to be able to get her back into bed and make some decisions about her care, but he would not let anyone move her until she signed the documents that we needed.   There was no argument from her and the documents were signed giving us the ability to care for her in the best way possible.  I know that must have been very difficult for my husband. But to this day I am grateful for his professional side.

The next step was to have my mother evaluated so we could see the physical issues that we were dealing with. She was moved to a dementia facility for testing. In the two weeks since my dad's death my mother had lost a tremendous amount of weight and not only was she diagnosed with dementia and early onset Alzheimer's ,but also failure to thrive. All of those diagnosis gave us access to hospice care.

After arrangements had been made for care and changes made in our home we brought her here.  There was never a question about where she would live and who would be responsible for her.  It's what we do.  We care of our own.  The next 3 years are extremely difficult and I will begin to share that tomorrow.

Beginning

I'm writing the story of the loss of my mother and brother, a great lesson for me in love and living.  You can find day one here.

When I was a teenager my mother's mother came to live with us.  She was ill and my mother brought her to our house to care for her.  A few years later my stepfather's mother came as well for care.  My father's brother cared for my paternal grandparents until they both passed away.  I think you may see a pattern.  It is what I learned in my youth.  We care for our own.

Even though my brother passed 19 years before my mother, I wanted to concentrate on her first.  Maybe because it is more recent or maybe because the pain remains so great.  Bear with me these next few days.  I need to tell this story.

I lost my father at the age of 10 to a massive heart attack and my mother remarried 3 years later.  We called him Dad. In order to tell Mom's story you need to know about Dad. He never made it passed the 8th grade, but he rose to be the head of maintenance at the Johnson Space Center at Clear Lake City close to Houston. NASA became a common destination.  Dad was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2004 and died in February of 2005.  I quit my teaching job and returned to Nursing full time so that I would have a schedule that allowed me to drive him to chemo every week. My mother was suffering from severe emphysema and needed monitoring as well.  In the midst of this we were planning my oldest daughter's wedding and it was suddenly called off. I don't know how we managed.  I do know it was one of the roughest spots.

The day Dad passed is one I will never forget.  There are details I still cannot reconcile and many I'll never have answers to, but in the moments immediately after he died my mother suffered a massive nervous breakdown.  Over the next 10 days, my mother did not leave her bed.  I planned a funeral with the help of my husband and arranged 24 hour care for my mother while we buried my father and tried to figure out how to proceed.

Tomorrow.......  The fall.

" Thank you for listening to my story.  I've never publicly told it, but writing it out is therapeutic and I hope that something may be beneficial to a reader."

Choosing Life

April is the month I became a mother for the first time, but is also the month I suffered terrible loss.  Both my brother, my only sibling, and my mother passed away during April.

This week I'm going to spend some time here reflecting back on how I cared for those I've lost.  In a progressive culture of expendibility, I find it is important for the voices of those who hold life sacred to be heard.

See you tomorrow🌹

Letting Him Lead

Texas weather is so fickle.  The temperatures are like a roller coaster. Thursday there was no green in sight.  Today, hardly no white in sight.  What you see is the shaded areas of my yard where small amounts of ice and snow remain, but those will likely be gone tomorrow as we are expecting a full day of rain and then temps rising to the 70s.

Today Mr. Golfer and I return to our beloved dance lessons.  It has been several years since we formally danced and when we are on the dance floor it shows.  If you "don't use it you loose it"is so true! With our youngest daughter's wedding fast approaching, we must take up our dancing shoes again. These are my favorite Capezio shoes.  I just feel like I'm  gliding when I have them on.

I think every couple has one or two things they really love doing together.  Mr. Golfer and I have such varied interests, but ballroom dancing is something we love to do together. And in these years that we have not danced consistently we could tell a difference in how we related to each other.  Dancing tested our relationship.  Letting him lead.  You see that is always a condition with wives and mothers.  We tend to be the organizers, goal setters, and social planners. But in ballroom dancing you have to let that go and truly follow.  A sure challenge!

So today..... I let him lead!

Ice.....Day Two

The temps are still well below freezing today.  Some are venturing out to work.  Mr. Golfer made the trip in as well.  I'm always unsettled when he is determined to get to the office on these unpredictable days.  Most people here just don't know how to drive on these icy roads.  But when you are the business owner.....time is money:( I didn't make the trip in with him.  He won't be there very long.

On top of these two days of  ice, we are expecting 4-6 inches of snow tonight and into tomorrow morning.  It seems like in the last 3-4 years all of our cold weather has come at one time.  We are out of school for sometimes a week and then it is all over for the year.  I don't know which is better or worse.  It just is.

I never have difficulty deciding how to spend days like these.  It is always a gift to have a respite from the usual day.  Today I am going to do some deep cleaning in a couple of rooms.  I'm going to try to play around with the flower girls dresses.  Laying out the fabric and looking at the grain and so forth.  Hopefully another good Netflix movie:).  Have you seen the newest release of Jane Eyre?  Oh my it is good.  I've actually watched it several times. I'm also reading The American Heiress.  British aristocracy has long been a fascination and when you toss an American into it the complications are  intriguing.

There is also chicken thawing for my favorite Chicken Divan Soup.  Isn't it just natural to want to have soup simmering on a cold day?

I've also ventured out to take some photos of my knitting on the ice.  Just thinking that it would be a great picture for Yarn Along tomorrow.

Enough of the ramblings today.  Stay warm!

Reinventing Continues

My oldest grandson, Patrick, attends preK at one of our Catholic schools.  Each year there is a fundraiser and classes contribute a project to be bid on at the auction.  I have become friends with two of the young mothers and we are working together on the project.  A quilt that will contain squares from all the children.

Today I cut all those squares and thought back to the days I did this as a mother.  Never did I think I would be doing it as grandmother.

When I began this blog I was concentrating on how to mother grown daughters.  That in itself is a challenge.  But now, how to be grandmother to school age grandchildren.  To not step on toes, but be helpful at the same time.  What a fine line to walk and balance on.

Yarn Along

First I must apologize for being so absent.  From here and other blogs in Yarn Along.  Wednesday mornings I am in bible study and have a short break before I do grandchildren carpool.  So hopping on to all the blogs is hit and miss.  It takes me a few days to be able to make the rounds.

These last two weeks have been consumed with wedding planning and the sewing is about to commence.  You see I am making the four flower girl dresses.  Yes, four.  All the little nieces will be walking down the aisle ahead of the bride.  Such a sweet site.  This is the first time one of my daughters has married and  her sister's children will be in the wedding.  A new memory:)

The ceremony music is in place.  Because we have experience with music, the daughters have had special pieces they prefer.  This youngest is particularly choosy. But it is going to be gorgeous and meaningful and sacramental.

Secret knitting is moving along.  I'm having thoughts on a giveaway at the end of this.  Of course not the knitting, but maybe a bag?

No reading this week.  I have fallen into bed each night exhausted.  Netflix has been my friend.

Pardon Me........

for being away a few days.   My good friend at my knitting group " reminded" me I had not posted in a few days and she missed me.  So Beverly, this is for you:)))))

I have done a small amount of home sewing this past week.  I love buffalo check and I found this fabric for sofa pillows.  There is a small amount left over for a few tiny accent pillows and I may tackle that this week.

Most of last week was all wedding.  The guest list is final and although we are 15 guests over what I would like I know there will be those who will not be able to attend.  All in all I feel good about the number.  The venue the couple chose is so beautiful, but it is meant for smallish gatherings
(comfortable is about 250).  I am hoping we are under that number as I am planning the seating chart for 240.

The table decor is divided into 3 different centerpieces and one of them we actually have been collecting ourselves.  I can't share what they are, but my engaged daughter and I share a love for it so we have had fun shopping.  We have one piece left to purchase and that part is finished.  I just have to store them all until September:(

Yesterday, Mr. Golfer, myself and the bride to be went on a hunt for old windows.  Before I go any further let me tell you a story.  My second daughter was married during November and her favorite fall dessert is pumpkin pie.  She decided she wanted each guest to take home a miniature pumpkin pie as a favor.  I spent months buying small pie shells and cans of  pumpkin.  The Wednesday before the Saturday wedding we assembled the sisters, my best friend, and all the ingredients in my small kitchen.  For hours we mixed pumpkin pie ingredients, poured into shells and baked. We had soooooo much fun!  I think actually it was the highlight of the wedding.:). My 8 foot dining room table was covered with 360 mini pumpkin pies!  We placed them into cute boxes, tied with ribbon and affixed a sticker and toted all of them down to the reception venue to be put in their refrigerator.  Sooo, this bride to be has her own DIY project and it involves antique windows.  And it can't be accomplished until the week of the wedding!  As stressful as it sounds, I know it will be fun.  And because I am not working there is more time to be prepared as we go.

We met with our florist this past Friday and went through the list once more.  Some items we had taken out we put back in. We took some of the centerpieces that were collected so she had an idea of size.  She just fell in love with the idea.  It's so nice when professionals see and share your vision.  Our wedding planner was there as well and have I said enough how I think that is the best spent money?  She makes the week of the wedding so relaxing and fun for us.  This is our third wedding with her and she has become such a good friend.  Love you Betsy!

This week is a week of lists for me.  I know the major tasks that need to be accomplished in the next 3 months, so I will be making phone calls and emails this week to get those set.

The bride to be is just a little overwhelmed with all the tasks and decisions.  She told me last week that when we need to do something to give her 3 choices and she will choose from that.  I love that idea and actually it makes it very easy for me:)))

Christmas and Wedding Planning

I really have so much to write, but only time to sit and pound out a few words and add a picture.  Christmas is upon us here as well as where you are.  Caitlin and Zach left Wisconsin this morning and should arrive tomorrow night.  I can't wait!

But wedding plans are still moving along.  The bride-to-be and I picked up a special dress today and did a little looking.  It involved a hectic trip to Dallas.  One of the bridesmaids works at Neiman Marcus and although that is not on my regular shopping rotation, with her discount we have scored a lovely
"going away" dress  and my MOB dress.

So I leave you for a couple of days with a picture captured this morning of my baby girl and me.  We don't get these pics too often:)))

My Advent

All of my Catholic life, all 35 years, I have learned and listened to others about what Advent is supposed to be.  I hear and read about quiet times.  Prayer times.  Listening to God times.  And although I do spend time each morning in prayer and reading scripture, my Advent is anything but quiet.  In fact I think as it approaches, the message becomes full speed ahead!

I was visiting with 2 young mothers at my grandson's school.  We meet each afternoon for pick up.  They are so cute and we just jabber away to each other.  We were talking about Advent and what our impressions were.  All nodded when the above expectations were mentioned.

But later in the day, it caught me.  Who really ever said that Advent had a particular course?  My Advent has been spent taking care of grandchildren while their mother was ill with the flu.  Taking grandchildren for flu shots so they wouldn't get the flu!  Doing homework and giving baths so tired mothers wouldn't have to after a long day at work.  Going on field trips to build memories.  My Advent has been full of what it should be for me and I am grateful beyond measure to be able to be these hands for my daughters.

There was a time not long ago when I was still angry over the loss of my job.  Angry because of the loss of income and especially the loss of health insurance.  But as always, God's wisdom is sovereign and he knew where he wanted me.  This is my Advent.

A Very Special 60th!

It happens only once and it should be a blast.  The party was scheduled to happen at our oldest daughter's house.  Twenty four hours before the party she fell ill with a nasty flu/virus.  We quickly regrouped and moved it to our friend's home who was sharing the birthday with us.

We have known Rush for a number of years.  Some of our children had been aquainted in their younger days.  When our oldest daughter was engaged, Jerry and I began to take ballroom dance lessons and we met Rush again as he was learning as well!  What began as a simple reuniting flourished into dinner every Friday night after lessons.  Rush, his wife Mary, and Jerry and I have eaten together every Friday night for the last 8 years!!  Now I should clarify there may have been just a very few that didn't happen due to illness or trips, but you get the point.  It is a standing date.

Well these two men also turn 60 within 2 weeks of each other, so a party had to be in the works.  With about 30 family and friends, Mary and I threw a great party.  Fajitas and barbecue, a cake big enough for 60 candles and Jerry's favorite.....bread pudding from The Fort Worth Club.

But, I have to say my favorite moment was him opening his gift.  He has had a winter fedora for a number of years.  Not many men can pull off a hat, but he actually has women stop him on the street and compliment him.  For several years he has wanted one for summer.  This year I found just the right one.  Don't you agree he rocks it!

Happy Birthday to the love of my life!

Yarn Along

My Jeck sock is progressing.  The gusset is my favorite part of knitting on a sock.  I'm not sure why.  I just enjoy its construction. I'm hoping in another week I can have the pair finished.  That will give me many weeks to wear during this Advent and Christmas season.

I'm writing this Tuesday night and can say today was turning point in the wedding plans.  The dress came in and we went for a first fitting.  Can I just say I have never ordered a wedding dress for a daughter and had it fit perfectly when it arrived!  Lord, please let this be a little reprieve in the many costs of a wedding:))

Drawstrings is having a Cyber week sale!  All bags in the shop are 15% off this week.  Use the code CYBERWEEK14 at checkout. This includes custom orders!  Message me through the shop if you have questions.

My reading has been nonexistent this past couple of weeks.  The only print in front of my eyes has been guest lists.  This weekend we celebrate a big birthday for Mr. Golfer and an engagement party is just weeks away.  Save the Date cards should be in soon and Christmas cards as well!  So many lists!!!!!

Recovering

The blog has been quiet these last few days.  We have had people in and out of the house as most of you have as well.  I didn't take many pictures when we all gatherd.  It is always so busy when they are all here, which I love, but I just don't think about grabbing the camera.

It was a nice Thanksgiving though.  The children( except Caitlin) and grandchildren all arrived Friday and we had our first Fiesta!  It actually was a lot less work on my end, so we amy make a point of doing this every other year when I don't have them on the actual day! I'm sad though that top picture doesn't have Mr. Golfer at his end of the table.:((. While we were eating the grandchildren, who had finished their meal quickly, made haste to the bedroom/playroom and had quite a bit of "fun"!

We spent Thanksgivng Day with our close friends at a private club.  At the last minute our youngest daughter and fiancé joined us.  The food was fabulous, but a very different way for us to spend a holiday.

This coming weekend is Mr. Golfer's 60th birthday celebration!  It is also our close friend's 60th as well, so we are having a grand party at my oldest daughters's home.  I hope I rememver to take pictures!

I began some new socks. This yarn was spun and dyed by a lady at my LYS.  Her shop is called  Brazen Stitchery.  I'm really in love with her yarn.  It is 75% merino, 20% Nylon, and 5% Stellina.  Beautiful feel and Lucy to knit with.  I using the pattern Jeck.  It is a simple pattern repeat which is what I was searching for after all the multitude of stitches in the No Purl Monkeys I just completed.

Tomorrow is Cyber Monday!  Ginny at Small Things will be hosting a sale for all her sponsors.  Drawstrings will be part of that sale!  All bags are 15% off.  Use the code HOLIDAY14 to receive the discount.  If you do not see exactly what you want please message me through the shop and I will do my best to create it for you.  I will also apply the code to custom orders.  You can't loose with that!
