Week Ending Vol 33 Ice Storm Edition

Today is day 3 of being house bound by the ice.  Now mind you, I am not bothered by this at all.  I love being home and always keep busy with projects, cleaning, and just plain piddling.  Mr. Golfer, on the other hand, is not used to being here 24/7 and has been going a little crazy.  To his benefit though, I will say he has handled it well.  Reading, reading, reading, and a little practicing his golf putting with drinking glasses on the family room floor.  Drove the cat crazy!

This is the same picture from Friday.  Nothing has changed.  It warmed to 33 degrees today for about 3 hours, but not enough for any melting to occur.  Temps back to the 20's tonight.  Schools are closed again tomorrow.

I had filled the bird feeder before the storm so Mr. Cardinal made an appearance!

So what kept me busy?

A little sewing.

Christmas knitting.

And a re-organization of one wall of my knitting/sewing room. Yes, that's just one wall.  A little embarrassing actually.

Today begins the second week of Advent.  Amazingly enough, our diocese was given a special dispensation to cancel al Masses due to the weather.  I have never known this to happen.  But really, this ice storm has been unbelievable.  When the police tell you to stay home, it's bad.

I hope your weekend was warmer than mine.  Please say a special prayer for Mr. Golfer.  he really needs to get into the office tomorrow.  I am very worried about him traveling tomorrow.

Week Ending Vol 32 Advent

I really have no pictures to post.  :(  Thanksgiving  and my back pretty much did me in.  Are you tired of hearing me whine complain?  Daughters came on Wednesday and did a lot of the cooking.  Thursday would have been dismal without their help. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving ( and I pray you did as well) with all the family here.

The rest of the holiday I have just rested, read, and knit.  Not too bad because I think the next 3 weeks with grandchildren before the Christmas break will be exhausting!

But, today is the first Sunday of Advent.  I keep thinking that this pain is meant for a reason this year.  Slow down.  Enjoy Advent and don't rush Christmas.  Enjoy the waiting and the coming.

I  see the chiropractor again on Tuesday.  Hoping that each treatment will continue to ease the pain.

Week Ending Vol 31 - Cold Brrrrrrr!

Our area is under a Winter Storm Warning for tonight.  There is an expectation of sleet and ice overnight.  It's cold here.  Right at the freezing mark at the moment and due to drop into the upper 20's tonight.  I may be one of the few that love these events.  Staying home with ice or snow on the ground just soothes me.  I love any reason to be quarantined in my snug home.

 

Our oldest daughter and her husband rarely have time out on their own from the children.  Their weekends are devoted to spending time with them because they both teach all week.  Yesterday they were invited out for a movie and dinner with friends, so we went and spent the day with the children.  Since I am caring for the little ones all week, Mr. Golfer doesn't see the grandchildren as often as he used to, so they were just drawn to him yesterday. It didn't matter if he was napping or not!

 

 



Even Milo wanted to be next to him.

And it gave me extra time to cuddle with Luke.

Tomorrow is my day to start the preparations for the Thanksgiving dressing.  My mother's cornbread dressing is a 4 day process.  I would normally begin this tomorrow, but since I will probably be with the children, I decided to go ahead and begin today.  The cornbread is cooked and crumbled with the sage added.  It will sit this way through tomorrow until step #2.

I used the quiet day to begin a sweater.  This is on the cover of the winter Knitscene. The Sylvia Cardigan is just enough plain knitting and cables to keep me interested.

 

 

I am using Queensland Leche in a mint green colorway.  The yarn is so soft and easy to knit with.

 



The cables are small with slip stitches on each side.  A fun little combination of stitches.

Week Ending Vol 30 Putting It All Back Together

You can hardly turn on the television this week and not hear some reference to the 50th Anniversary of J.F. Kennedy's death.  You hear most of the actual assassination in Dallas, but many are not aware of the President's stop over in our wonderful city the night before.  JFK and his wife Jackie spent the night in Fort Worth at the Hotel Texas the night before that fatal day. My husband was 9 years old and his mother took him downtown to get a glimpse of the President and get a glimpse they did.  Mr. Golfer says what he remembers most is Kennedy's flaming red hair, which in even color photos, you do not get a good idea of how red it was.  My husband sits on the Library Board for our city and this past Friday night the libraries hosted a " Night With Bob Scheiffer". Mr. Scheiffer was a police correspondent for the Fort Worth Star Telegram and was involved in the details of that day.  He was interviewed by Tracy Kornet.  It was a wonderful event and I learned a lot of details I was not aware of.

 

 

 

Following the presentation, we walked down to a new venue in our city. Fort Worth has a prominent, philanthropic family that has spent millions of dollars over the last 10-15 years revitalizing our downtown.  The latest venue resulted in Main Street being closed and the construction of an area that is just gorgeous.  What you see in this photo is a shallow fountain.  Each of those light are water sprays.  They were not turned on when I took this picture, but imagine then shooting about 20 feet high.  You can see the people walking thought the water.  It is very shallow and meant for all to be able to enjoy it.

 

 

Now for the results of our painting project.  The living/ dining room are all back together just in time to have 13 here for Thanksgiving dinner.  I have spent all week putting most of the touches together.  Still some to do but they can be completed slowly. The chalkboard painting you see will be a tutorial in a few weeks.  Need to have time to get it right!

Week Ending V0l 29 - Painting Edition

This weekend was unusual in that I was able to convince Mr. Golfer to help me paint.  He hates to paint.  But our living/dining.  area is fairly large and just too much for me to do alone.  He caved. Sweet man.

The last time this room was painted was 2005.  I remember that because my mother was still alive and living with us.  A co-worker of mine came and helped me.  Neutrals were very "in" ( not to say they aren't now, but I usually always have a color on the wall) and so I chose " Parchment".  I believe it was a Behr color from Home Depot.

One of the things it has taken me years to learn is the relationship between paint color and lighting.  In the past I have just chosen a color I liked and used it.  Most of the time it was a mistake, as it was with Parchment.  Our house has a front southern exposure with a porch overhang.  This means the light is filtered coming in the only two windows in this area. After 25 years in this house, I finally figured out shades that work.  I love blue.  But the blues for this lighting need to have green undertones in them.  Last year I discovered Benjamin Moore's Wyeth Blue.  You can see that on the wall in the entry way.  What we ended up using in the living/ dining area was a shade lighter.  Sherwin William's Rainwashed.

Yesterday and today have been very gray days, so the true color is yet to be seen.  But so far I really like it.  I am still moving furniture around and deciding which items to keep ( my favorite part of putting a room back together). I'm not sure whay the picture with the piamo makes it look dirty, but I can assure you it is not!  Daughter Caitlin would be very upset as that is her piano ( a Make A Wish gift).

Week Ending Vol 28 - Longhorn Edition

It is no secret that the blood in this family is burnt orange.  We are Longhorns to the core. My 3rd daughter, Caitlin, an alum, returned to Austin after grad school.  This past weekend I was due for a visit.  She texted me this on Friday.

 



 

 

 

 

Caitlin goes to a lot of games, so it is really no big deal to her. But, she knows I love to go.  Football is in my blood.  I will jump at the chance Every. Single. Time.

 

Prior to the game we had a lovely brunch at Russell's.  $2 Mimosas will get my attention anytime!

 

Because she works at the Capitol, we were able to tailgate with the staffers.  Notice the flag wristband?  That got us in. Seats were in the NW corner of the stadium 51 rows up.  Not bad at all!

During my high school years I was in the band and a twirler.  UT is one of the few colleges left that actually still has a twirler.  I love half time!

 

We were exhausted post game, so we grabbed dinner and headed back to her house.  With daylight savings time ending that night I was ready to stay up and talk and watch a movie, but by the time we finished cleaning up from the grime of a day in the sun, I could hardly hold my eyes open. 

 

Sunday morning we met one of Caitlin's high school classmates and her husband for Mass at the Cathedral in Austin... St. Mary's.

 



Absolutely gorgeous church!  The gospel reading was the story of Zacchaeus from Luke 19. In the homily the priest referenced the Body and Blood of Jesus as being " cheap wine and failed bread" before it is transformed.  I love that picture in my mind.  Failed bread is of course the unleavened bread, but I had never thought of it in those terms.  Love.

We had brunch at Hillside Farmacy. A very eclectic eatery that was once a pharmacy, but is now a small eatery and grocery. This time a carafe of mimosas!

And no trip to Austin would be complete without a yarn store stop.  This time Guage Knits.  They were having a showing of Hazel Knits Yarns and I was looking for a particular color.  I will share it with you on Wednesday.

My trip home was not so fun.  I 35 is the bane of Texas driving and our family refers to it as  " the highway of death!"  It is usually a 2.5 - 3 hours drive between Austin and Fort Worth, but yesterday it took me 5 hours to get home.  I don't drive well in the dark at all and it was way past daylight when I arrived home.  I literally fell into bed!

But...it was a great weekend! I love visiting Caitlin.  She is a wonderful hostess!

Every fall we do a family photo.  This began when our oldest daughter was born 32 years ago.  As the years have gone by the family has grown and grown.  We are now at 13!  This year we did things a little different and when the final photo is chosen I will tell you the story.  For now... this is a glimpse of what it was like trying to get 13 people to look at the camera at the same time!  It's a phone pic, so the quality is poor, but you get the idea.

Week Ending Vol 25 Company and a Birthday

It was a fast and full weekend. We had our close friends here from Indiana and that always brings more to try to do than there is time.  You will notice that there are no pictures of she and I together.  We were busy!  We went on a semi Yarn Crawl, and entertained 15 of my family for a 30th birthday.  I will try to do better next time!

The flowers above are my Obedient Plant.  These were given to me when we moved into this house 25 years ago. One plant became a field!  The name comes from the fact that you can bend this plant at the stem and it will remain in that shape.  They are fall bloomers and the color is very welcome!

Must mention that the Texas Longhorns finally showed up to play football this season!  They beat OU!!!

Added wonderful yarn to my stash!  The 3rd picture is a yarn brought to me by my friend from a local dyer in her area. Can you see those pretty silver sparkles?  Love! 

Mr. Golfer rarely gets into pictures, but I did capture him and my youngest daughter's boyfriend with the grandchildren.  It was a great party, but my hands were very busy preparing and serving!
